I reviewed this book for AudioFile Magazine, and it's the recipient of an Earphones Award.The Nazi Hunters chronicles the 16-year ordeal to capture the notorious Nazi, Adolf Eichmann. Narrator Jason Culp conveys a palpable sense of the fear and tension endured in dangerous and fraught circumstances.

Julie of the Wolves - a free book giveaway

If you're a regular reader of Shelf-employed, you'll know that I've never had a contest.  Whenever I receive free books from authors or publishers, I prefer to personally put them in the hands of young readers, fitting each book to the proper reader.

However, today I'm making an exception because of an interesting and somewhat non-tangible offer from Open Road Media of a copy of the Newbery Award winning, Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George.

Earlier in the summer, I downloaded, read, and reviewed Open Road's enhanced digital version of the classic, Mr. Popper's Penguins (provided to me by NetGalley).  You may read that review here.  In a nutshell, Open Road offers digital downloads of some new, but primarily older, well-known titles, that have been repackaged digitally with additional associated content, i.e., photos, video, drawings.

Open Road Media has been kind enough to supply me with a free e-book download of Jean Craighead George's Newbery-winning book, Julie of the Wolves, first published in 1972. In addition to the wonderful survival story of a young Eskimo girl, this new digital edition "features an illustrated biography of Jean Craighead George, including rare photos from the author’s personal collection."

National Library Week

It's National Library Week

 Here are a few things you can do to celebrate National Library week.

3. Visit ilovelibraries.org and see how you can help your library
4. Visit your library
5. Many libraries are threatened with budget or staffing cuts.  If you love your library, tell your friends, write the newspaper, blog it, tweet it, post it!  (and, oh yeah, you can tell your librarian, too!)

Nonfiction Monday

I'm taking a vacation day, but Nonfiction Monday never takes the day off.  You can visit SimplyScience for all of today's Nonfiction Monday posts.

Next week I'll have a review of T is for Taj Mahal: An India Alphabet, and later this week, I'll have my picture book favorites of 2010.  (I left my notes at work in my copy of Kneebone Boy, and I'm disappointed on both counts!)

More good reading for today can be found at StoryTubes, a great contest for kids 5-18.  Here are the rules in a nutshell:

Make a short video about your favorite book and use the online form to enter and compete for prizes. 

It's a wonderful opportunity to promote books and creativity; it's also a chance for kids to show their film making chops. Entries are accepted from January 19 to February 28.
